Data Capture Institute performed its first assignment for the UCC in the summer of 1990. The deliverable product of this study was a report titled "Application Identifiers to Extend the Power of UCC/EAN Serial Shipping Container Codes." Thirty-four AIs and their syntax were recommended in our report, and were quickly adopted by the UCC and EAN. These, and additional AIs that have been adopted since that time, have become the backbone of many standard commercial bar code driven applications in the food and non-food sectors of international commerce.

Since 1990 DCI has performed seven other specialized studies and tasks for the UCC. These studies have resulted in recommendations involving bar code innovation or standardization in the following areas:

• High Encryption Technology
• E-Commerce
• Operational asset component management, repair and reorder
